A literal understanding of Genesis is an important issue, and it's one all those who believe in evolution have to deal with. However, the danger lies on both sides: holding a literal understanding when the literal understanding is not what God meant can get you focused on earthly things rather than spiritual things.

Evolution is not driven by a desire to eliminate God. It's driven by evidence discovered in science. Once someone spends time in science, it's easy to see what discoveries drove Darwin, and even some before Darwin, to consider evolution.

Atheists do use evolution to justify their atheism, but evolution was not considered for the purpose of eliminating God. History makes that clear.

While i do not believe i macro evolution, from polywogs to polar bears, and I actually do not know enough to engage in this debate, both creationists and atheists will tell you why a literal understanding Genesis is important, and the problems with theistic evolution. Evolution seems largely driven by a desire to eliminate God, and even I.D is scoffed at, and perhaps creationists have at least tempered their claims by presenting some problems with evolution. Yet it is inaccurate to portray evolution as a dying animal, as is often down by some creationists.

Personally I don't see why Christians get all worked up over creationism/darwinism.

I don't think Jesus is going to really care at "your big interview" about which side of the fence you were on that issue, He is just going to care if you did his will......
