Water Baptism in Christian History

For those of you that read my blog, but not Christian History for Everyman, I’m just letting you know I made a page on water baptism for that site.
It’s pretty comprehensive, even though it only touches on the mode of baptism by accident and that only one time.
I have to admit, I have a lot of philosophical tension with this subject, as many modern evangelicals do.
On the one hand, it is difficult for me to accept that a God who took away one system of outward observances and “expand” or “fulfill” them as you’ve explained, would then institute another one, even if it is just limited to baptism.
On the other hand, I cannot deny the very clear testimony of the scriptures as I read them. And I’ve become more and more annoyed with anyone explaining such things away, much less myself.
All this to say that I really appreciate your teaching on this subject and think that its probably the best I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a lot.

It's an issue that's been coming up for 30 years. Two things have always stood out …
1. Baptism was clearly the initiation rite, step one
2. God never locks himself in a box, and there's plenty of people that really love enforcing God's rules even when God is not enforcing them.
